California to Washington Transport via Medical Motor Coach
At MedFlight911, we sometimes recommend a medical motor coach for patients who need non-emergency medical transport. Sometimes, it’s the ideal mode of transport because the patient can’t sit upright, as is required during takeoff and landing on a commercial airline; other times it’s ideal because the patient has a lot of luggage to bring along; other times, it’s simply the most affordable, comfortable option. But many people aren't familiar with medically equipped motor coaches, so I thought I’d take some time today to share the story of one of our recent medical motor coach journeys.
We were going to be transporting an elderly woman from her home in Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. Her husband had passed away recently and she was living on her own. She didn't have major medical issues, but her son had decided it would be a good idea if she lived closer to him in Washington.
For this trip, we'd be travelling in a nearly brand-new motor coach. The 43-foot-long vehicle was top of the line in virtually every way, with plenty of space for the patient, her caregiver, and the three-person medical crew (who also doubled as drivers). In fact, the coach was so large that when we went to pick up the patient, navigating some of the narrow streets in her neighborhood was a bit of a challenge – though we pulled it off, of course!
Once we got the patient and her caregiver settled on the coach, we were ready to be on our way. The entire trip was scheduled to take about 21 hours. We were able to speed the trip along since each member of our medical transport crew was also a driver; all three could take turns behind the wheel – one driving, one resting, and one looking after the patient.
Having such a spacious, well-equipped coach made everything about the journey more comfortable. For example, while the patient was resting comfortably in the coach's stateroom, her caregiver was able to rest on a bunk just outside the stateroom's door. The coach had also been equipped with all the medical gear that we typically bring with us on any medical transport, so we were prepared for any emergencies that might arise.
Having such a well-equipped vehicle made the trip pleasant for everyone involved. It also allowed the MedFlight911 crew to provide the optimal care for the patient. That's our ultimate goal of course.
